An onsite soil evaluation is the crucial first step in the septic system installation process or when repairing an onsite sewage system (septic system). This assessment is mandated by the Indiana State Department of Health and must be conducted by a Registered Soil Scientist. Additionally, your county may require a soil evaluation to subdivide an existing parcel. It is advisable to reach out to your local health and zoning departments to understand the specific requirements in your area.
Septic systems represent a significant investment, so ensuring that your system will function effectively for many years is vital. We conduct a thorough soil evaluation to assess characteristics such as texture, drainage, parent materials, and any limiting layers that could impact proper effluent infiltration. In most cases, we can carry out our evaluation using hand augers; however, there are situations where digging soil pits may be necessary. We will provide a detailed report within a day or two and send it to you, your county health department, and your chosen septic designer/installer if you have already selected one.
