What Happens During an On-Site Soil Evaluation?

An on-site soil evaluation is required by Indiana state law before a septic system can be permitted. The evaluation determines whether the soil conditions at your site can safely treat and absorb wastewater from a septic system — and if so, what type of system is appropriate.

Cool Soil Consulting performs most evaluations using hand augers, advancing borings to the depths required by the Indiana State Department of Health. In some situations — particularly in areas with shallow bedrock, dense subsoil, or where moraines require pit testing — soil pits may be necessary instead of or in addition to borings.

What We Evaluate

During the evaluation, Kevin examines and documents the soil profile at multiple locations across your site, looking at:

  • Soil texture and structure at each horizon
  • Depth to the seasonal high water table (redoximorphic features)
  • Depth to any restrictive layers (dense till, bedrock, fragipan)
  • Soil drainage class and saturated hydraulic conductivity
  • Site topography and setback distances

What You Receive

Within one to two business days of the site visit, you'll receive a completed soil evaluation report. The report documents the soil conditions found, the system type(s) that meet those conditions, and is submitted directly to your county health department and/or your chosen septic designer or installer.

Indiana Professional Soil Scientist #156. Every report issued by Cool Soil Consulting is signed and certified by Kevin Cool, IRSS #156 — the credential required by the state of Indiana for professional soil evaluation work.
